Consumer-rights advocates say struggling retailers don’t do a good enough job notifying customers of what will happen to gift cards.

“I don’t see big glaring announcements that say: Use your gift card now,” said Shelley Hunter, a spokeswoman for GiftCards.com. Earlier this year, Ms. Hunter started an online “Gift Card Watchlist” to update shoppers on deadlines for using gift cards at closing store chains and how to file a bankruptcy claim.
